Sudhin Dasgupta was an influential Bengali music director, lyricist, composer, and singer whose contributions shaped the development of modern Bengali songs and film music.
Born Sudhindranath Dasgupta in Darjeeling, he developed a strong foundation in music from childhood and became skilled in playing several instruments, including sitar, sarod, harmonium, piano, guitar, violin, esraj, tabla, and drums. He later studied music at the Royal School of Music in London.
After settling in Kolkata, Dasgupta began his professional journey by assisting renowned composer Kamal Dasgupta and working with cultural organizations before establishing himself as an independent composer. His first recorded compositions, including “Kato Asha Kato Bhalobasha” and “Keno Akash Hote,” were released in 1953, beginning a career that lasted until his death.
Dasgupta created music for numerous Bengali films, including 'Kokhono Megh,' 'Pratham Kadam Phool,' 'Picnic,' and 'Palanka.' His composition work for 'Picnic' earned him the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Award for Best Music Director. He also wrote and composed many popular non-film Bengali songs, with recordings preserved through archives such as Saregama.
After he died in Kolkata in 1982, Sudhin Dasgupta left behind an extensive body of work comprising Bengali film compositions, modern songs, and lyrical creations. His contributions to Bengali music, both in cinema and independent recordings, established him as an important figure in the evolution of the region’s musical traditions.
